Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey has entered an innocent plea to making false statements to US legislators and hindering a congressional proceeding.
The former director's legal representative filed the answer on his behalf in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.
Patrick Fitzgerald declared he would try to have the legal matter dismissed for various causes including that his the accused, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.
James Comey was formally accused just days after the former president pushed his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.
In court on mid-week, the defense counsel Mr Fitzgerald informed the judge they planned to submit various motions to throw out the proceedings before a court case, claiming the prosecution was vindictive and that a government lawyer was wrongfully designated to take over the proceedings.
James Comey's case was first managed by the original attorney, who stepped down under scrutiny from the former president after his examination into another opponent - NY AG Letitia James - failed to bring criminal charges.
James Comey appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the court on Wednesday, speaking with his lawyers and making jokes. He was supported by his wife, Patrice Failor and offspring Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the previous administration dismissed.
Following the reading to the magistrate recite his rights and the pair of allegations against him in court on mid-week, Mr Comey was asked if he grasped the accusations.
"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the court.
Mr Comey was the head of the FBI from four years and was dismissed about several months into Trump's first administration as national leader. At the time, the director was overseeing an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any relationships between Russia and the election effort.
During his tenure, James Comey triggered a backlash from the Democratic party when he declared just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was examining presidential nominee Clinton's use of a personal email system. Charges against the candidate were not filed, causing criticism from Republicans as well.
Government attorneys allege Mr Comey gave untrue statements to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They say he provided false information to the Senate by stating he had not permitted someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to journalistic entities data about the agency probes.
Legal representatives also allege Mr Comey of "improperly attempting to sway, obstruct and delay" the panel by providing untrue information to it.
In a video the former director shared to his social media after he was indicted, he declared he was innocent and charged the former president of acting like a "tyrant".
"We have understood for years that there are consequences to challenging Donald Trump," he commented. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Thus initiate a trial."
The charges against James Comey came after the former president published on online platforms insisting on his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, take legal action against Mr Comey and other people.
